Mourning cloak 5.0-6.0 cm Alberta, Canada Alberta populations are primarily referable to subspecies hyperborea. On a global scale it is the most visually distinct cloak taxon due to its reddish dorsal colour. Hyperborea may be better treated as a species distinct from antiopa on the basis of genetic, structural and colour differences plus lack of any known intergradation with Asian populations.
