The original description of this species was as a distinct species (Colias elis). This is based on phenotypic ecological and genetic differences.
There is insufficient evidence that the taxon C. meadii elis is accurate even though it is used in the literature.
Very hard to get as they only fly at 6200 ft above sea level. A must for the serious Colias collector.
It is distinct from the other Colias as it has a scent patch on the top of each hind wing on the recto side.
